Dental Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth restorations that fit over the top of your tooth. A crown is a permanent tooth restoration that’s custom made to fit your natural tooth. Greder Dental offers two options for dental crowns: laboratory-made crowns and crowns made with the state-of-the-art CEREC system.

Laboratory crowns take 7-10 days to fabricate, and they’re made from a range of different materials including IPS e.max®, zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and composite resin. CEREC crowns are made from ceramic, and they’re available on the same day as your appointment. Your Greder Dental dentist can help you choose the right option for your needs.

When do I need dental crowns?

Dental crowns are highly versatile restorations that can help in all of the following ways.

  • Repair a broken tooth
  • Stabilize a weak tooth
  • Strengthen a worn tooth
  • Repair a badly cracked tooth
  • Tooth restoration after a root canal
  • Support a dental bridge
  • Restore whiteness in a badly stained tooth
  • Replacement tooth as part of a dental implant

Dental crowns are the strongest and most stable type of restoration, so they’re ideal for repair of even severe damage.

What is the dental crown process like?

Your Greder Dental dentist starts by preparing your tooth. This involves removing a thin layer of enamel, which helps your crown feel and look natural instead of sitting above your other nearby teeth. After preparing your tooth, your Greder Dental dentist takes a series of painless digital impressions to get the most precise measurements possible to design your crown.

For a same-day crown, your dentist sends a digital blueprint to the on-site CEREC milling unit, chooses a ceramic block that matches the color of your natural teeth, and places it in the milling unit. The CEREC machine makes your new crown while you wait, and then your dentist cements it into place.

For a laboratory-made crown, you have at least two appointments, but the process of placing your new crown is generally the same. Your Greder Dental dentist can make any minor adjustments needed while placing your crown.

Your custom crown can restore your teeth to give you optimal appearance and function. Click the online scheduler or call the Greder Dental office to make your appointment today.
