Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the discipline of medicine that focuses on adjusting the position of your teeth to straighten or better align them. As a result, orthodontic treatments make it easier for you to maintain your oral health by keeping your teeth and the spaces between them clean.

Common bite issues that may cause you to seek orthodontic treatments include:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between your teeth

If you follow all of your Greder Dental dentist’s instructions throughout your orthodontic treatment, the results will last for a lifetime. That means having a more visually appealing smile, fewer dental complications, and less stress on your bones. This stress can lead to neck, jaw, or back pain.

What are my options for orthodontic treatments?

Greder Dental provides two innovative devices for orthodontic alignment. They are:

Invisalign®

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that gradually repositions your teeth using a series of custom clear devices that fit over your teeth. You wear an aligner for about 20-22 hours each day, and you progress from one aligner to the next in your plan every two weeks. During this time, you visit Greder Dental once every six weeks for a review of your progress.

Retainers

Retainers come in many forms. The team at Greder Dental may give you a custom retainer following your Invisalign treatment to hold your results in place.

Removable retainers fit like an Invisalign aligner, but you don’t have to wear them all day. Simply wear your retainer overnight or as your dentist advises you. Other permanent retainers come in the form of metal wires fixed to the backs of your teeth.

How long does it take to align my teeth with orthodontics?

When getting orthodontic treatments, you can expect them to take some time to complete. Of course, you won’t know exactly how long you can expect your treatment to take until your Greder Dental dentist has a chance to look over your teeth and use digital software to gain a comprehensive view of the way your bite fits together.

Invisalign orthodontic treatment can take 6-18 months, perhaps longer. Provided that you change aligners diligently and take them out only for eating and cleaning, the treatment time that your dentist quotes you will be accurate. Removable retainers, like the type mentioned before, may be necessary only for months, not years.
