Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent solution for tooth loss. Your Greder Dental dentist installs the dental implant post in your jawbone, which ensure its stability, and it’s attached to a crown restoration. Greder Dental offers three types of dental implants.

Traditional implants

Traditional implants are made from either titanium or zirconia. A traditional dental implant usually contains two pieces: a post and a screw. The screw goes inside the post, and then protrudes above your gumline so Your Greder Dental dentist can attach your custom crown.

You typically need a few appointments, spaced over at least six months, for traditional implants. This allows for healing time after extraction and implant post placement.

Mini implants

Mini implants have a one-piece post that’s topped with a ball-shaped attachment for your custom crown. Mini implants usually require less healing time than traditional implants.

Same-day implants

If you want to get your new teeth the same day as your implant posts, your Greder Dental dentist can place immediate load implants. This type of implant holds a temporary crown, which means you don’t have to be without teeth while your mouth is healing.

Other teeth replacement options, including implant-supported dentures, could also work for you. Your Greder Dental dentist helps you to choose your best option.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many benefits, including:

  • Eating: Normal chewing ability restored
  • Speech: Able to speak more clearly
  • Stability: Dental implants won’t move around
  • Longevity: Dental implants are permanent

Many dental implant wearers also say they feel far more confident, and less hesitant to share their smile with the world.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Your Greder Dental dentist evaluates your oral and general health to determine whether implants are a good choice for you. A few things can complicate your candidacy for dental implants, including:

  • Lack of healthy jawbone
  • Gum disease
  • Smoking
  • Heavy drinking
  • Some types of medication
  • Uncontrolled diabetes

Most of these problems have answers, though. For example, if you don’t have enough healthy bone for dental implants, you could be a good candidate for mini implants, which require less bone. Alternatively, your dentist might recommend bone grafting to improve your jawbone density.

If you drink, smoke, or have uncontrolled diabetes, working with your medical doctor can often control these issues so you can become a good candidate for dental implants.

The Greder Dental team is here to help you get a fully functional smile through dental implants. Book an appointment online or by phone today.
