Porcelain Veneers Q & A

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin covers made of porcelain that are permanently attached to the fronts of your teeth. The sole purpose of veneers is to improve the appearance of your smile: If you’re looking for more bite strength for a certain tooth or you want to treat an unattractive tooth in the back of your mouth, crowns are the more appropriate choice.

Today’s porcelain veneers don’t look bulky, irregular, or suspect in any way in your mouth. In fact, they look nearly identical to your surrounding natural teeth. Your Greder Dental dentists  custom create them for you so they fit your smile in color, shape, and size.

What types of irregularities can porcelain veneers fix?

You might be pleasantly surprised to find that veneers can fix a wide range of cosmetic issues. With a durable veneer, you can cover:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Misalignment
  • Short or small teeth
  • Wide gaps
  • Stains and discoloration

These issues might seem minor, but fixing them makes a big difference in the way your smile looks overall.

What is the process for getting veneers?

When you arrive at Greder Dental in search of a better smile, your dentist physically examines your mouth. Veneers are best used for teeth that you can see when you smile, so your dentist focuses on the front of your mouth during the exam. They also check for signs of gum disease, which could impede the process of getting veneers.

The next parts of the procedure depend on which type of veneers you and your Greder Dental dentist decide is best for you. They are:

Traditional porcelain veneers

For traditional porcelain veneers, your dentist removes some enamel from the surface of the teeth that require them. Then, they take digital impressions to use in the design and crafting process, which takes a couple weeks. While you wait, you may wear temporary veneers.

Once your permanent set is ready, your Greder Dental dentist tests their fit, bonds them to your teeth, and makes any necessary final adjustments.

Minimal prep veneers

Minimal prep veneers, like Lumineers® or DURAthin® veneers, are thinner than traditional porcelain veneers. If you get them, your Greder Dental dentist doesn’t have to remove any enamel from the fronts of your teeth before attaching them. Minimal prep veneers are potentially reversible should you decide you don’t want them anymore.
