General Dentistry Q & A

What does general dentistry include?

General dentistry includes routine dentistry care like checkups and dental cleanings, as well as preventive dental care like fluoride treatments and dental sealants.

The Greder Dental team is here to help your whole family enjoy optimal dental health for a lifetime. In fact, several members of your family can get treatment at one time at Greder Dental.

What happens during exams and cleanings?

Your Greder Dental dentist performs a detailed dental exam of your teeth, gums, and mouth structures to check for problems or potential issues. An oral cancer screening is an important part of your exam. Dr. Greder uses ViziLite®, an advanced fluorescent light test that can identify oral cancer even before it’s detectable with a visual exam.

If you need digital X-rays or other advanced imaging, Dr. Greder takes the images during your exam. Imaging can clarify problems or identify issues that aren’t yet developed enough to be obvious.

Next, a Greder Dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar using a scaling tool. With the toughest plaque and tartar deposit gone, your dental hygienist applies dental cleaning paste with a high-powered brush. Your dental hygienist also flosses your teeth to ensure deep cleaning all the way to the gumline.

If you need a fluoride treatment, your Greder Dental care provider applies it to your teeth after your exam and cleaning.

How often do I need checkups?

The American Dental Association strongly recommends regular dental checkups and cleanings, based on your dentist’s individualized recommendations. Your Greder Dental dentist recommends checkups and dental cleanings every six months to keep your teeth and gums in good shape.

What can I do to prevent dental problems?

There are a few important things you can do, including:

  • Brushing and flossing twice a day
  • Using a fluoridated toothpaste
  • Using antibacterial mouthwash

You might also need professional dental preventive care, such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants. Both are especially helpful for children, because their teeth are still developing and they don’t necessarily brush as carefully as they should. Dr. Greder makes personalized preventive care recommendations for you and your family.
